DESCRIPTION:Run by an AI and Reproduction Specialist and certified inseminator\, students will learn the theory and practical aspects of both manual and ultrasound pregnancy testing of cattle. \nCourse Length: 2 days \nStudent Maximum: 8 per course \nUnit includes:\nTheory – reproduction \n\nDetermining pregnancy in cattle\nImportance of inter-calf period\nDry- & fresh cow management\n\nHormones involved in getting & keeping a cow pregnant \nPractical  \n\nPalpating reproductive organs\nDetection of early pregnancy\nUltrasound scanning for the foetus between 60 and 80 days\nFeeling for late pregnancy to determine dry off\n\nAnimal Husbandry (specific to breeding health) \n\nDairy Classification and Body Condition Scores (PennState BCS module)\nCalf Management\nGenetic Classifications\, including farm application\nPhenotype traits and application for breeding and showing\nFarm visits – differences in facilities and calf rearing management\n\nThe completion of this course requires the passing of a written exam. \nDustcoats and gumboots will be provided for all students to use for the duration of the course.
