Introduction to Chemical Immobilisation and Restraint of African Mammals (Game Capture Course)

June 8 - June 12

Run by a team of a registered veterinarian and a wildlife vet nurse, students will be guided through the process of game capture and immobilisation of African mammals with both theory and practical experience.

Students will have the opportunity to learn the theory of game capture and immobilisation, as well as put that theory into practice. Participants will learn safe weapons handling and have the opportunity to apply their skills by darting a wild animal with antiparasitic darts.
(Note: Only SAVC-registered veterinarians are authorised to use the scheduled drugs required for immobilisation.)

Course Length: 5 days

Student Maximum: 6 per course

Unit includes:

  • Basic physiology
  • Complications of capture
  • Considerations before, during, and after darting
  • Pharmacology
  • Weapons safety and dart gun use

The completion of this course requires the passing of a theory exam.
